Diese Städte stehen symbolisch für drei kulturelle Felder, durch die Europa während der letzten 500 Jahre maßgeblich geprägt wurde. Denken und Anschauungen, Spiritualität und Kunst haben aus lateinischen, orthodoxen und islamischen Quellen geschöpft und so Europas Identitäten gestaltet. Sie sind weit bedeutender als die meisten Scharmützel und Kriege von Fürsten und Königen verschiedenen Ranges, wie sie während der Feudalzeit andauernd geführt wurden. Gegenüber den lauten Feldzügen hat der vergleichsweise stille Handel zwischen diesen unterschiedlichen Kulturen viel wesentlichere Entwicklungen bewirkt.

Bezug nehmend auf diese drei Städte (Wien / Beograd / Istanbul) drücken wir unsere Konzentration auf solche Zusammenhänge aus. Was nicht bedeutet, der Fokus unserer Aktivitäten sei bloß auf Zentren, Metropolen gerichtet. Im Gegenteil. Die Basis von „next code“ besteht in Gleisdorf, einer kleinen Stadt in der Oststeiermark. Das Projekt ist auf prinzipielle Art in Zusammenhänge verzweigt, die sich vom Denkmodell „Zentrum / Provinz“ abwenden. (Martin Krusche)

Why Vienna / Beograd / Istanbul as reference points?

These cities stand symbolically for three cultural fields, by which Europe was considerably shaped during the last 500 years. Thinking and opinions, spirituality and art emerged from latin, orthodox and islamic sources and in such a way arranged the identities of Europe. They are far more important than the most skirmishes and wars of princes and kings of different ranks, as they were continuously led in times of feudalism. In relation to the loud campaigns of war the comparatively silent trade between these different cultures has caused many more substantial developments.

Taking reference to these three cities (Vienna / Beograd / Istanbul) we express our concentration on such connections. Which does not mean, the focus of our activities is only directed toward centers, metropolises. On the contrary. The basis of „next code “exists in Gleisdorf, a small town in the Oststeiermark. (A part of Styria in Austria.) The project is in a constitutive way branching out into connections, which turns away from the idea of „center / province“ as model for further discussion.
